1. Basic Science: conductors,

2. Basic Neurophysiology:
neurons, membrane potential, depolarization/ action potential, synaptic
potential EPSP and IPSP, neurotransmitters, dipole.
3. Anatomy: anatomic reference
terms, CNS - brain, major lobes, homunculus, brainstem, location of cranial
nerves, cerebellum, spinal cord, sensory and motor pathways, CNS vascular
supply. PNS - cranial nerves, spinal nerves, nerve plexuses. Anatomy pictures
included.
4. Instrumentation: differential
amplifiers, common mode rejection ratio (CMRR), polarity, gain, sensitivity,
filters, analog to digital conversion, vertical resolution, S/N ratio with
equations, horizontal resolution, Nyquist frequency, signal averaging. Includes
references from ACNS 2006 and AEEGS 1994 guidelines.
5. Electrodes and
Stimulators: types of electrodes - surface, subdermal, spinal

6. Methods of Recording: types of EPs

8. Anesthesia and
Physiologic Factors: Pharmacology - inhalational agents,
MAC, IV agents, NMB agents, regional anesthesia, pharmacology effects on
each modality. Physiologic Factors - BP, ICP, oxygenation, ventilation,
temperature.
9. Pre-Op Preparation/ Intra-Op Monitoring:
policy and procedure, communication with surgical team and patient, equipment
set up, equipment requirements*, baselines, documentation, criteria for
abnormality*, Stagnara wake-up test. *Includes references from ACNS 2006

10. Surgical Procedures, Risks and Monitoring
Modalities: Spine Surgery - scoliosis, kyphosis, spinal fractures,
herniated disc, tumors, tethered cord, selective dorsal rhizotomy, acetabular
surgery. Cranial Surgery - posterior fossa, acoustic neuroma, aneurysms,
MVD, Carotid Endarterectomy*, ECOG*, functional mapping**, WADA test. Otolaryngology

11. Surgical Instrumentation:
spine surgery instrumentation, brain surgery instrumentation, high risk
surgical procedures.
12. Troubleshooting:

interference, waveform resolution, EMFs, troubleshooting tips.
